Mannequin Depressives will be opening the first night of this year's CJSW Summer Concert Series by
playing a half hour set on Saturday, June 5th, at 6:45 PM, outdoors at Olympic Plaza in beautiful
downtown Calgary (as long as no really insane weather rains on our parade).
Other bands scheduled to play include "The Lions", "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" and
"The Polyshores". This should be an awesome way to kick off the summer so come check it out! It's
free!
Our latest release now available on CD Baby and iTunes - INCORRECT MECHANICAL ALIGNMENT -
is a compilation of "experimental soundscape" and "noise" works we've recorded over the
last few years. Some of the material is from re-worked variations of previously released
tracks, while much of it is actually sourced from raw improvised recordings that have
never been released before... until now!
Full audio clips will be available on the "Listen" page soon, and brief audio clips can
also be heard on the CD Baby
and iTunes pages.

Jan. 24, 2010 - CDBaby Donating to Haiti Relief
The earthquake and its aftermath in Haiti have touched all of our lives. Many
in the CD Baby family have already contributed as individuals, but we wanted
to do more to help the victims of the horrible earthquake tragedy.
Starting on Monday, January 25th and continuing for two weeks, we will donate
$1 from every CD sale through the CD Baby website, and $1 from every download
sale over $8.99, to the American Red Cross and to Mercy Corps, a
Portland-based relief organization with a large presence in Haiti. With your
help, CD Bay hopes to raise tens of thousands of dollars.
We also urge you to consider making your own direct donation if you haven't
done so already. Together, we can make a difference.
On behalf of all CD Baby employees, I thank you for helping out during this
time of great human tragedy in Haiti.
Sincerely,
Brian Felsen
CD Baby President
SMOTH AT SOUNDASAURUS!!
This Saturday, Jan. 23 2010, our own Scott "Smoth" Johns will be making some strange noises
at the Epcor Center in downtown Calgary, as part of the "Soundasaurus Experimental Sound &
Media Festival". He will be performing in the lobby area at 7:30 pm, just after Liminal
State's performance (assuming all things are happening on schedule). Both of these
performances will be rad, as will this entire festival.
Oct. 23, 2009: Support CJSW & Mannequin Depressives!
October 23rd marks the beginning of the 25th Annual CJSW Funding Drive, and
every year CJSW hosts a band challenge as part of the Drive. For every $50
pledged and paid in a band's name during the Funding Drive (paid before
November 20th) the band is entered into a draw for a day of recording time
in a big time studio!
Here's how you can help:
Phone 403-220-5000 the week of Funding Drive (October 23-30th) and make a
pledge. (If you pledge this Sunday night Oct. 25th between 10:30-11:30PM
during Turing Radio, you can win cool Mannequin Depressives swag too!)
When you go into CJSW to pay your pledge (located in room 127/312 MacEwan
Hall at the University of Calgary) tell them you want to pledge for
Mannequin Depressives.
If you don't live in Calgary you can also pledge online at
www.cjsw.com. The payments
go through PayPal and you can make a note that you'd like your pledge to go
toward Mannequin Depressives.
For every $50 pledged in our band's name we'll get an entry into the draw.
Remember, the draw is on November 20th so get your pledge in soon!
Remember, you don't have to necessarily pledge a lot! Every little bit counts
and it all adds up!
More info about the CJSW Funding Drive:
CJSW, or the University of Calgary Student's Radio Society, is a non-profit
organization. The annual fundraising campaign generates the capital required
to keep the station broadcasting to the greater Calgary area at 4000 watts
(and on-line to the world), 365 days a year. Funding Drive donations are
essential in keeping up with the ever-changing world of radio, including
helping to cover the cost of streaming on-line radio and improving and
maintaining the FM signal.
All pledges over $25 also get some great swag with their pledges. This year
you can get a CJSW Friends card, a one-of-a-kind CJSW t-shirt, a sweet 2-disc
CD compilation with live sessions from CJSW 90.9FM, CJSW apron, ice cream
scoop and much more.
If you have any questions check out the CJSW website at www.cjsw.com
or phone the CJSW office at 403-220-3902.
Oct. 18, 2009: Why can't I find a GOOD quality non-special edition version of
Star Wars?
As you may have noticed, we've made a few minor changes / improvements to our
website here. The Listen page now features audio players that play the album
in their entirety, and we've just started a page at flickr to handle the
overflow on our Images page.
Also, we've added a single for download on our Free Music Downloads page.
It's for the song "Break" and it features both the original and the new
revisited versions (as well as a few other tracks). More additions will be
made to the Free Music Downloads page soon, so check back!
And now, for your viewing pleasure, one of my favorite MD moments caught on
video... it's us blowing the power at The Warehouse right in the middle of
performing the song "Break".
(PS: I'm sorry that the title of this post really has nothing to do with the
post itself. It's just something that's been bugging me lately and I couldn't
think of anything else to use as a title for this entry)
Ciao,
-Rod
June 13, 2009: MD to play live at The Underground!
On Friday, July 3rd, MANNEQUIN DEPRESSIVES will be performing live at
The Underground (733 - 10th Ave SW, Calgary Alberta) as part of Datalink's live
performance series. Doors at 9PM. Other bands performing include
THE RABID WHOLE, IVARDENSPHERE and SANGSARA. This is gonna be a wicked show,
so don't miss it! And, as always, I'm obligated to point out that The
Underground is a private club for members and invited guests only, so you
need to have a membership or get signed in by a member... or you can buy your
own membership.
-Rod
May 6, 2009: "reCycle" is out now!
After a slight delay, our latest release, "reCycle" is now available online
at CD Baby, and it should be up and running at iTunes and other digital
retailers soon! Click here to
check it out!

April 10, 2009: "reCycle" CD release / listening party in Calgary!
(First, here's the short version for those of you who don't wanna read so much
text...)
CD release / listening party for the new MD release on Friday, April 17th at
The Underground! You should come! It'll be fun! Dress all crazy like! Act all
crazy like! Dance all crazy like!
(...and now for the "proper" version of this announcement)
The latest release from Mannequin Depressives, "reCycle", is a compilation
album featuring remixes, B-sides and other previously unreleased material
(including two remixes by releveleR). The album will be released earlier in
Calgary on April 17th, and will be available to the rest of the world on May
1st.
There will also be a CD release / listening party in Calgary on Friday,
April 17th at The Underground (733 - 10th Ave. SW). Doors at 9 PM. Tracks
from the album start at 10 PM, with hard beats from DJ Kosmonaut and DJ
Astroboi to follow. $5 cover at the door. (Remember, The Underground is
technically a private club for members and invited guests only... so if you're
not a member, find a member to sign you in, or you can buy a membership at
the door.)
The version of the album that will be sold at the release party is actually a
slightly different version than the one that will be available on the net on
May 1st. The "Calgary Edition" will be a limited edition, hand-numbered
version featuring a different opening track and alternate packaging to the
international version.
So yeah, to make a long story short... CD release / listening party on
Friday, April 17th at The Underground! You should come! It'll be fun!
Dress all crazy like! Act all crazy like! Dance all crazy like! Wooohooo!!!
-Rod
March 16, 2009: New MD Release in April, Summer Gigs, Nice Shoes
Summer's just around the corner! You can smell it in the air! At least...
I think that's what I'm smelling. Maybe that's the Avenue Diner? No... wait...
that's definitely summer coming.
And this summer we're going to try and make
up for all the gigs we didn't get to play last summer. Nebulous' injury has
healed nicely and he's good to go (actually, we were thinking we'd have to put
him down and replace him with the Nebulous-bot 3000 that Russ & Scott built,
but fortunately Nebulous pulled through. Now we have this stupid robot here
and we don't know what to do with him).
And in other news: Mannequin Depressives will be releasing a compilation CD
entitled "reCycle", featuring remixes, B-sides and other previously unreleased
goodies from the past few years (in fact, we found so much cool stuff while
compiling this, don't be surprised if a second volume appears in the
not-too-distant future)!
The album will be released this April and there will also be a CD
release / listening party to go along with it! More details coming (as soon as
we get them all sorted out).
Ciao for now,
-Rod
January 2, 2009: Announcing MDTV - The Official Mannequin Depressives YouTube Channel
We just whipped together a YouTube channel for Mannequin Depressives... so
now you have a quick and convenient way to find all of your fave MD clips
(okay, so we really only have a bit of live footage so far, but there's more
on the way)!
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, but we've all been quite busy as usual
(I feel like all of my entries should start with that sentence... yeesh).
Things are going well and we have lots planned for the new year (I can't be
too specific yet since we're still working on the details... let's just say
we have "several projects in various stages of production")
The new album is doing quite well digitally thanks to CD Baby and iTunes
(a definite sign of the times), and it seems to be doing exceptionally well
in Russia (didn't see that one coming... perhaps it's time to start thinking
about that world tour). Locally the album is also doing quite well...
speaking of which, we now have it available in the local section at Hot Wax
(and of course it's also still available at Megatunes, Play, Melodiya and
Sloth), so if you're a Calgarian living or working near any of those places,
you can always swing by and pick up a copy of "Girls Are Evil" as a
stocking stuffer!!
Speaking of stocking stuffers, I still need to finish (make that, "start")
my Christmas shopping... oh well, I've always been told that I work best
under pressure.
Ciao for now, and if we don't get a chance to drop you all a line again,
"Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!"
-Rod
June 13, 2008: WHAT'S UP? WHERE ARE THE GIGS?
Yeah. Since we just put out a new album, you'd think we would be playing some
gigs to support it over the summer. Well, that was the plan, until keyboard
player Jared "Nebulous" Brookes damaged himself by completely seperating his
left achilles tendon! To quote Neb's MySpace blog, "the friggin' thing popped
right off during a Kendo match". BUT, he can be re-built (like the six-million
dollar man), and once he's fully functional we WILL be doing some more gigs.
In the mean time we're working on some remixes and some new stuff. Also,
Scott "Smoth" Johns will be performing with Broken Paws at The Soda this
Tuesday night (June 17), doing some experimental stuff with audio and some
video (to be honest, I'm not sure what it is, so come out and check it out
with me). Also, Kat from CJSW's Turing Radio will be doing some DJing along
with DJ Kosmonaut (with whom I DJ with at the Underground on the first and
third Thursdays of the month for the Datalink night).
GREETINGS TO "R! SOCIETY"... a couple of cool synthpop dudes I met at the EMC
birthday bash on Thursday night. Don't be surprised if we do some gigs with
guys in the future!
Until then...
-Rod
March 20, 2008: Girls Are Evil is out now!
Our new album is officially released and available online at CD Baby, and it
should be available on iTunes soon. To order it from CD Baby, click here
(they have it available as an actual CD, or as a digital download).
If you live in Calgary, you can also pick it up at Sloth Records or
Megatunes... and it should also available at Play (downtown location) and
Melodiya by the end of the week. It's also gonna be available at our CD
release party, which is tonight at The Warehouse! The only place where you
can get exclusive MD buttons.
Be the first on your block! Get 'em while they're hot! ...and any other
cheesy sales-pitch phrases I can think of.
-Rod
March 16, 2008: Girls Are Evil excerpts Now Online
Our new album, "Girls Are Evil", comes out this week! Go to our Listen page
to hear excerpts to tide you over until the album's March 20 release, when
you can buy online (or at select retailers).
And don't forget to come to the CD release party this Thursday, March 20 at
The Warehouse nightclub (731 10th Ave SW, Calgary AB). Doors are at 9PM (more details below).
-Rod & Russ
CD Release Party for Girls Are Evil - March 20, 2008
The CD release party for our new album, "Girls Are Evil", will be taking
place on March 20 at The Warehouse (731 10th Ave SW, Calgary AB). The cost
is $8 in advance (advance tickets available from Megatunes, Sloth, and The
Warehouse). Doors are at 9:00 PM.
This is gonna be a night jam-packed with awesome music, featuring live bands
playing on both floors - upstairs at The Warehouse and downstairs at The
Underground - including:
-Fritz Helder & The Phantoms
-Mannequin Depressives
-Phonotactic
-Thee Thems
-The Funfuns
-Beneath These Idle Tides w/ Morgan Greenwood (of Azeda Booth)
This show is on a Thursday (March 20), BUT it's a long weekend that week
(Good Friday), so come on out, see some wicked bands, and party it up with us!
March 20 is also the day of the Vernal Equinox, so come out and party for
that reason too!
NOTE: The Warehouse is a private club for members and invited guests of
members. If you don't have a membership, come in with someone who does so
they can sign you in... although, I think most of you out there already have
memberships, and for those who don't (and don't know anyone with one),
they're not that expensive and they get you into some sweet shows!

Jan. 27, 2008: Official Release Date Announced for the new MD Album
The new album by MANNEQUIN DEPRESSIVES entitled "Girls Are Evil" will be
officially released on March 20, 2008. We'll also be doing a CD release
party at The Warehouse (731 - 10th Ave. SW, Calgary AB) on that date too,
which will include live performances by MANNEQUIN DEPRESSIVES (obviously),
as well as BENEATH THESE IDLE TIDES w/MORGAN GREENWOOD, PHONOTACTIC, and more!
Further details to come (once we get it all sorted out).
We'll also be posting some sample excerpts from the new album, so check back
soon!
-Rod
Jan. 7, 2008: New Album to Manufacturing!
The new album is being sent to the manufacturer this week, so it won't be
long until it starts showing up at stations nationwide. We're still on
track for a March, 2008 release date. Stay tuned!
Left Spine Down w/ MD @ the Underground
The August 6th show with Left Spine Down was a wicked ol' time! We definitely
enjoyed meeting LSD and their fearless crew of wildmen (for the record,
Nebulous misses his Pac Man lunch box, too).
Best of luck to LSD on the rest of their tour.
-Neb
SodaBlast!
A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the show last night at the Soda. We had fun,
hope you did too! Mike & Richard of EMC did a great job organizing (thanks to the mgmt.
@ the Soda too, for letting us in a bit early for sound check), and lots of people went
home with door prizes. We're sure the next 3 years will be even bigger for EMC!
Now it's time for us to let our hair down and have some fun!
As a "thank you" to everyone who has supported us during the
Emergenza Festival (and spent way too much money on tickets to see us play
20 min sets), MANNEQUIN DEPRESSIVES will be playing a free full-length show
along with on Thursday, June 21st at The Soda (211 12th Ave S.W., Calgary, Alberta) at 9 PM.
This show is also to help celebrate Electronic Music Calgary's third
anniversary! It's gonna be a party and a half, so come on out!
-Rod
Emergenza Calgary Final Update!
The final show for Emergenza in Calgary was lots of fun and the crowd was
awesome (amazing to get that much energy off you guys so early in the night).
We did not end up winning, but we did do quite well (the crowd voted us into
the top 6, and from there the judges picked the final winner). Congrats to
"United We Fall" for winning the Calgary round! Good luck in Vancouver!
A big thank you to everyone who came and supported us on this show
and all of the previous shows leading up to this (you're all so bloody awesome
- I can't even think of the right words to describe how much you all rock!)
And again, to all of you that wanted to be there to support us but couldn't
make it, we know you were with us in spirit!
I have to say, we really enjoyed playing these shows with Emergenza. We got to
meet a lot of awesome people and bands (and we also managed to snag a few new
fans along the way too!)
Well... now it's time to organize some proper shows (where we can play for
more than 20 mins)... and I guess we should get back to work on that promised
second album too!
Stay tuned...
-Rod & the MD boys
Emergenza Round 2: Thanks Everyone!
We had a blast playing in round 2 of the Emergenza Festival on Friday...
although the power outage that happened half way through the set was kind of
annoying (I hope you all enjoyed the beat box and squeaky squid solo...
along with the bad jokes).
Despite the power outage, we still managed to come in as the second highest
voted band of the night. Thank you so much to all of you who came out and
supported us yet again! Because of you, we're moving on to the third and
final round for Calgary. This time, 10 bands will play and ONLY ONE will move
on to the next city (which is Vancouver).
The next round will actually be upstairs at The Warehouse on a Saturday
(June 2nd), which will be a nice change -- The Underground is
nice and all, but the stage is just a bit small for my taste -- and maybe the
power outage was because they didn't have enough juice for our lights!
Thank you again to all of you who came out! (And thanks to those who wanted
to come out but couldn't make it. We know your thoughts were with us.)
More to come...
-Rod & MD boys
Emergenza Round 2 @ The Underground
Mark your calendars for Friday April 6, 2007 to see Mannequin
Depressives live at
The Underground.
We placed first in Round One, gathering the most audience votes -- so
we plan an even higher energy show this time around. Those who attend will
be the first ever to hear the new single Victim of Circumstance
from our upcoming album!
Round one of the Emergenza battle of the bands was a success, and Mannequin
Depressives are moving on to round 2. We enjoyed playing the show and also
enjoyed taking in the sights and sounds of the other bands (who all played
fantastic sets as well). Well done, everyone, and thanks to all those who
came out so see us play.
Stay tuned for the Calgary semifinal in April. Be sure to bookmark the
Emergenza Calgary Show Schedule
and check often as the April show dates draw near.
-Russ & Rod
MD @ Emergenza 2007!
MD will be playing a short set on Jan. 12, 2007 at The Underground Nightclub
(731 10th Ave SW - Calgary), playing with some of the the best bands in
Calgary, as part of the Emergenza
Tour.
This is like a "battle of the bands" type of thing. Eight bands play on the
first night and four of them will move on to the next stage. As far as we
know we're the only electronic band participating in this event, so this
should be interesting :-). The ranking is based on crowd response, so come
on out and make some noise!
Cost at the door is $18. If you're in the Calgary area, get in touch with us
and we'll get you advance tickets for only $12. Just send us an email at
mannequin_depressives@hotmail.com
and include "tickets" in the subject line.
-Rod
Back To Work You Slackers!
Summer is over, and now it's time to get back to work. We basically took the
summer off this year. Last winter was a pretty busy one for us and we decided
we deserved a break, dammnit! OK... maybe we're just lazy bastards. We really
meant to get work done. We needed to "make contacts" and "network" (aka. go
out and get drunk w/people a lot).
Our latest single, "Sweet Disease" is slated for its official international
release in November, and our second album (which is, as yet, untitled) should
be out early next year. So there's a lot to look forward to.
Scott, put down the vodka and get back to work.
-Rod
The Morning After...
The Feb. 25th show at the Warehouse Nightclub in Calgary was a huge success --
we had a great time opening for The Birthday Massacre, as well as hanging with
them after the show! We wish them the best on the next leg of their tour.
Pics of the show to be posted ASAP on our Images page. Check back soon.
MD + Birthday Massacre Live @ the Warehouse, Feb. 25
Come see Mannequin Depressives this Saturday, February 25th at the
Warehouse Nightclub! We are pleased to have the opportunity to open for
The
Birthday Massacre. Doors open at 7PM, 18+. Tickets available at
TicketMaster,
Sloth Records and MegaTunes.
Come on down and enjoy Calgary's premiere alternative and electronic music
scene!
January 25, 2006: New site is live!
If you're a new visitor, WELCOME! If not, you'll notice the new look.
The goal is to have a site that is easy to navigate for our visitors, and
quick to update for the webmaster (that would be Russ. Sucker.) If you
have comments/questions, send us an email
-- we'd love to hear from you.
We're pleasantly surprised to hear that our new single, "Sweet Disease", has
spread as far as Boston! We got an email from
DJ Synthetic:Love
requesting copies of the single.. apparently it's being well-received at
his club. Off to the post office we go!
October 30, 2005: New Single Released: "Sweet Disease"
The official version of Our new single, "Sweet Disease", has gone out to
select DJs and radio stations around the world in anticipation of the release
of our second album.
Russ's mission to drop off some special preview editions of MD's new
single "Sweet Disease" in Seattle's excellent Musicwerks shop is accomplished,
we'll hopefully see him again in a while when he's back from holidays.
Then it's back to the studio to finalize "Sweet Disease" and a new track,
tentatively entitled "Guilty"...
August 20, 2005
In preparation for our new single, we have commissioned remixer and
musician extraordinaire Karl Mohr to produce alternate versions
of selected songs from our upcoming album.
Karl's special touch is sure to
result in some magic which we'll eagerly share with everyone once it's done.
March 15, 2005: Still at it...
We're still at it. Our philosophy when making music is to take our time, and
get it right -- as time goes on, it seems that each album is tougher to make
than the last. Why? Because, the more you learn, the bigger the universe
becomes. Watch this space...
